It's like Morbid Angel covering The Chasm songs under the influence of Blood Incantation. This is but a vague comparison just to get some idea of what this ambitious band is trying to do over here. It's death metal through-and-through but they're doing so much with it, it would bring a tear to any classic fan of the genre. They insist on having only epic songs averaging 10 minutes; the album has only four songs and it lasts for just as long as a normal album would. The music however is relentless in its barrage of gargantuan otherworldly riffs, what with the ever-changing patterns and combinations, albeit delivered in a comfortable pace so that everything can be registered for posterity. It's an album that can withstand endless listens, offer everything a death metal fan would want and yet do so much more than an average album would because of their constantly evolving music that manages to remain engrossing as well. This is as epic as a death metal album can possibly get without letting go of any of the heaviness that's an inherent part of the band's sound over here. They've been refining their craft over the years and integrating elements to enhance their black metal sound. As a result, their music is a homogenous blend of sounds - intense, melodic, atmospheric, even melancholic - that amplify the emotions and that too in a compelling manner. The music is almost never one-dimensional; every song undergoes transformation in varying degrees to contribute something valuable and meaningful to the album. Much like life, it showcases the turmoil, anguish, and even flashes of triumph, emotions that are all too palpable in their delicately arranged and tempered music. "Khamsin" is a striking album of emotional yet understated expression, and one that makes a powerful and lasting impact. There are no 15-min songs on this one; most of them in fact happen to last for just around five minutes and Februus make sure that they're nonetheless packed with plenty of deviations and surprises that are of more varied textures and moods than before. The music on "Construction of Conflict" in that sense is more compact and effective without losing its expressive power - there is so much happening that a normal five minute song feels like it's much, much longer than that. And they're not just crammed in for the sake of diversity; the alternate-dimension parts flow fairly coherently, maintaining the groove and/or momentum, and almost always the section that follows. Februus remain one of the most interesting Swedish death metal bands today, always having a trick or three up their sleeves, while maintaining a deceptively rough, clamorous demeanour.
