There's an all too palpable menace in the sound - the aggressive, militaristic approach, the ominous, dread-filled music aided by a combination of abyssal growls and tormented screams, and ultimately, a haunting, eerie atmosphere touched by dissonance that wouldn't be out of place in a horror movie. Viande's music sounds chaotic even during the slower, doomier parts. It exerts a kind of control over you making you more susceptible to the imagery they intend to project with their sound. When this carefully devised album ends, the feeling is akin to stumbling out of a horrific catacomb in an enhanced spiritual state, with the cries of a thousand dead souls still ringing in your head. "Monument aux morts" is an exceptional album in the style and definitely not one for the faint of heart. It's wildly diverse and refreshing while retaining their core sound; it's a marvel how they continue to remain death metal or keep reverting to it after unabashedly exploring various sounds and imbibe influences from so many unrelated and unexpected styles. No song is redundant or sounding too similar at this point; they have something or the other hidden in it, often towards the end. This is decidedly their most ambitious album and they've outdone themselves on this one to offer a singular, exhilarating experience for the true prog-minded fans of the style. With the music on "Depressants" being as colourful as the Ian Miller artwork, it is anything but what the album title suggests - that's just the classic tongue-in-cheek Defect Designer for you. It took them five years to come up with a follow up album and the progress on it is simply staggering. The music seems to have taken an ethereal form, soaring above and raining down thundering riffs followed by shards of piercing melodies. The alternating showers ensure the music doesn't overwhelm with either blasting or mellow parts, maintaining an elegant balance that keeps you trapped in a dreamlike state throughout its duration. "Agnomysticism" is a highly accomplished album, virtually flawless in all ways, that takes the sound of the band forward and elevates it beyond the ordinary.
