They've not mellowed their sound as most bands would. Instead, they've rendered their sound even more devastating while making it more nuanced, perfecting their enviable balance of abrasive riffing and explosive breakdowns. Crawl keep mixing things around to keep things interesting and with bodies piling on top of one another, and what's more, with the album progressing, they begin to reveal black metal influences ensconced in their sound. It's good enough to have a Swedish death metal band showing how it's to be done and savagely sawing everyone's heads off with their rusted, jagged, crust-laden riffs, but for them to insidiously change the shades to black in the midst of all the mayhem is pure genius. They shape-shift as if to only deliver a final, decisive, finishing move through the speakers. Leaving no stone unturned, Crawl have come up with an album that should serve as an epitome of crust-ridden Swedish death metal in these times. In their faster, heavier moments, they seem to be a death metal band through and through but when they slow down, they showcase a wholly different dimension to their sound. They are able to do so without altering their imposing, crushing sound and the transitions in pace never seem abrupt but usually culminate into gigantic heaving and stomping parts as if a mountainous, infernal demon like the one on their artwork has decided to awaken after centuries only to mosh. It's the same the other way around, with slower parts building up to an apocalyptic rampage, volcanic fire spewing all over for added effect, and basically all hell breaking loose. It's only fitting that a Finnish band is tasked with this immense responsibility, with heroes from that land having already mastered both the styles and passed the skills down the generations. Baron are then indeed one of the most promising new bands from that part of the world, possessing the strength as well as having the sensibilities required to make this work, with surprisingly cohesive writing and clean, powerful execution. While I have been a big fan of their material since their inception, the new one blows it out of the water and is staggeringly good in all ways. I’m particularly fond of how they’ve retained traditional death metal sensibilities when unleashing contemporary mind-numbing brutality which gives their music an identity and sets them apart from the others in the style.
